Shine Kitchen

Posted on March 2013

All-new food offering from Yahoo! geared to inspire a food loving audience in a highly visual way with a combination of great content and utility.

The Project

Yahoo! wanted to invest in creating the best food experience on the web – it was already a top searched topic on Shine and one fot he top pinned topics on Pinterest. We wanted to attract a younger food-savvy audience by combining great content – both original and partner – along with new useful utilities such as saving and organizing recipes as well. Yahoo! was aggressively signing up new partners to expand its recipe offerings as well as hire new editors to infuse a new voice into the product.

My Contribution

  • Acted as design lead for duration of project.
  • Worked with all stakeholders (product, business and engineering) to understand and help shape the vision for the product.
  • Managed 2 designers: one f/t, one contractor to design the new look and feel.
  • Needed to understand and design within an outsourced technology to provide our recipe saving utilities.
  • Site map to identify flow and all new sections of shine that will be dedicated to the new food offering.
  • Came up with new feature called “inspire me” to give ideas to users who aren’t sure what they want to cook.
  • Designed constantly evolving wireframes – from low fidelity (to communicate vision) to high fidelity (to get sign off on feature set, to drive design, and for engineering to scope against.)
